The University has a Division of Equity and Inclusion that promotes inclusive excellence by working to ensure equitable access to opportunities, benefits, and resources for all faculty, administrators, students, and community members. The diversity statement of the university states that: Our goal is to promote inclusive excellence through a commitment to institutional fairness and equality, eradication of discrimination and by celebrating the strengths of a multicultural community. We serve the diversity goals and education mission of the University (http://inclusion.uoregon.edu/content/our-commitment) The diversity statement talks of promotion of inclusive excellence but goes further to state how this would be achieved. Although it does not mention the specific issues of diversity, it points out that discrimination on the basis of any would not be acceptable. The statement alludes to the benefits the diversity in the university. University Of Maryland The University of Maryland, College Park is a public research university located in the city of College Park in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The university started as an Agriculture College in 1856 and later became a land grant college in 1864. The college was upgraded to the University of Maryland in 1920. Currently the university has over 37, 000 students with a considerable population being of different nationalities and races. The university has a fully fledged office of diversity and inclusion. The diversity statement of the university states that: The University of Maryland is committed to “inclusive excellence”?the notion that in order to educate our students with excellence, in order to foster outstanding research and scholarship, and in order to be national and global leaders, we must be diverse and inclusive (http://www.diversity.umd.edu/) The diversity statement contemplates excellence in an environment that is inclusive. The statement does not elaborate on the various aspects of diversity such as gender, race, religion, sexual orientation etc. It simply says that whatever issues of diversity there may be, the goal is to be inclusive. It points outs that members of the university should strife to excel but recognize and appreciate that other people are different and no one is better. Comparison Both diversity statements commit the universities to promote inclusive excellence. However Oregon State University actively states what will be done to achieve inclusivity while the University of Maryland focuses on why it is important for an institution to be diverse. Both statements amount to the same thing but the one for Oregon is more proactive and forceful. Both statements shy away from mentioning any of the specific issues of diversity that may form a basis for discrimination. Both institutions have established offices/divisions to champion diversity.
