The main purpose of the assignment is to use thresholding to identify an object in a given image; each student will have a different image, image type, and size. Students will have to input the image into Matlab and convert this to a grayscale image in order to work with the image and speed up computation times. The effect of the threshold on the detection process will then need to be justified showing the histogram distribution and the variance growth graphs as evidence. After the optimal threshold has been found, noise will then be added to the image to see how this affects the watermark and the image as a whole. A noise removal methodology will then need to be devised in order to clean the image and restore it back to its original state as much as possible. After that, increase the noise density as much as possible and investigate the limits to which noise removal is still effective. Higher marks will be awarded for the higher noise densities that are investigated. Then you will need to find the histogram distribution of the image and then using the variance growth methodology as described in the lectures and the image processing tutorial to find an approximate range for the best threshold in order to successful identify the target object within the image.(You have to choose the object for your image) 20% A Using the approximation stated above, find a more precise threshold and justify your choice of threshold. The object of interest should be masked, this mask should compare the threshold values, when increased/decreased from the chosen threshold and specify why the chosen threshold is better than other values. (Proving it mathematically) 10% B Insert noise into the image (from the specification given in the Excel file in the Moodle directory) then investigate and discuss the effect that the noise has on the image bit levels as a whole (Maybe bit slicing). Is the noise concentrated in a specific bit level or throughout all levels? How badly affected was the identification of the object? Tamper with the noise image and explain what happens. 10% B Develop a methodology based to remove the noise from the image justifying your choice of noise removal, stating which method was best and why?
