In the last quarter of Jane Eyre the author sends Jane through the ringer but she wins in the end. When Jane finds out that Mr. Rochester is married she sets her mind to leaving him. The catch is Mr. Rochester wants her to be his “mistress”. This goes against all of Jane’s morals and values yet sometimes loves pull tries to outweigh all you have ever been taught. Jane, however, is strong and thinks rationally, according to her character, about this decision and decides she must go on. I believe the author sent this challenge Jane’s way to show us how strong Jane is and to give Jane the will to go and accomplish what she has wanted her whole life independence. Jane takes the clothes on her back and the little bit of money she has and is gone before anyone can even notice. She sets out on a journey to a new life. This journey to me symbolizes another new beginning. It is made to test Jane and this time to show us not only the strength of her character but also her physical strength. Jane finishes her physical journey on the doorstep of St. John at the very edge of death. I believe Mrs. Bronte wanted Jane to know the very worst conditions in life to further develop her character as a person. St. John saw in Jane something different and admitted her into his house and nursed her back to health. She assumed an alias because had Mr. Rochester come looking for her she didn’t want to be found. She took on the name Jane Elliot. When she got better independence was finally in her grasp. St. John offered her a position at his new school and a home of her own. The odd part was when she finally got what she had always wanted it wasn’t what she expected. She was empty to an extent and lonely at her own home. Her love for Mr. Rochester had tainted her ability to truly relish what she had so badly longed for her entire life. Jane is again given one of her life’s desires when her uncle finally contacts her and tells her he has left he…
