The cost of living in the area is extremely high and the effects of this are countless. Soaring prices has been a major cause for such high cost for living in the Silicon Valley. Everything from gasoline to dining out costs more than in most of the US. Houses are among the most expensive in the country, and rents are high. For example, gas prices have gone up to almost two dollars fifty a gallon in the valley. The cost of a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom house was sold for $797,000. Besides that, California was struck with power shortage recently, and the electricity bills have risen dramatically. Not only the prices of the utilities went up, but even the prices of food also went up. The food products in the Silicon Valley is much more expensive than the prices in other city in the country. Silicon Valley is consider to be the heart of today technological age. There are many big companies situated here. Lately, the economy has been slowing down and the stock market is on the downfall. This caused many companies to cut off many of their employees, and some even went bankrupt. For example, Cisco laid-off a large portion of its workers in the last three months. The increasing rate of unemployment, made lives of many to be even worse. Without a job, people cannot afford to be living in the Valley anymore.
