The 21st Century Manuscript

The 21st Century Manuscript

Please provide a sample section/page/folio/etc. of how you would “update” your manuscript for a 21st century audience. Both the knowledge/content of your manuscript and its physical appearance/organization reflects how medieval literate communities accessed and conveyed knowledge/information. How would you update these two components for a modern audience? Your update must take into account two overarching components: 1) The overall subject/field/content of your manuscript (i.e. the knowledge/information your manuscript contains) For example: religious materials, biographies, scientific treatises, etc. 2) The format/physical features/organization of your manuscript (i.e. the way that knowledge is conveyed/organized) For example: What the manuscript is made of, how are the texts arranged, the language it is written in, columns, margins, illustrations Assignment Components: Provide a sample page/folio/section of your manuscript in an updated 21st century context, taking into account as many of your manuscript?s original intended audience, agenda, and format as possible. It is important to both provide an analysis of the original manuscript (texts, decoration, organization, etc.) and how your modern version has altered (or kept!) these elements. Consider: *It is a luxury manuscript? What materials were used? Why? *Are there images/illuminations/illustrations? How do they add to the text? Why were they put there? *Is there one text or several? Why are they included? *What language(s) is the manuscript written in? Why? *Consider how these elements reflect medieval textual/literate communities: *Does the manuscript have academic, religious, or political relevance? *Was this an item of prestige/conspicuous consumption? *Was this owned by a single individual or a community? *Was this created for a member of the laity or a member of the ecclesiastical hierarchy? Your updated manuscript does not have to maintain the manuscript?s original form or even its texts; however, you must explain why you have changed or adapted these elements in order to better suit a 21st century context. You must provide a reason for why you have (and why you haven’t) updated these elements. The more detail for this, the better. Your explanations must be attached/included in your sample page in some way/shape/form that works with your updated format. What you DON’T have to do: You do not have to recreate the entire manuscript; only a sample page or section (depending on the format you choose) is necessary. Keep the language, text, or format of the original manuscript Create original content (A ?mockup? of the design/layout/use is all that?s necessary) Topics to Consider: -Have you changed the original text(s) found in the medieval manuscript? Why? Ex. Consider what other texts would be relevant in a modern context. Can you think of a modern counterpart to the medieval biographies, psalters, and breviaries? What modern texts or resources occupy a similar role in modern literate communities? -Have you changed the layout of the text? Why were medieval texts organized in the way they were? (Think of rubrication, marginal notation, illuminated initials, chapter divisions, etc). How would you update or change these in order to be of help to a modern reader? -Is it in a manuscript (or physical copy) anymore? Why or why not? You may present your updated manuscript (and your reasons for the changes) in any format you wish: Website/Webpage? Poster? Physical Page? App? Etc. Consider a side-by-side comparison in order to show the differences between the medieval and modern manuscript forms. Okay so you may get confused reading this but I am here to help you out. You have to do research on a manuscript called, “Book of Curiosities (12th-13th centuries)” This is the information: Available online at: https://cosmos.bodley.ox.ac.uk Summary: An illustrated manuscript of a hitherto unknown Arabic cosmographical treatise, the ?Kit?b Ghar??ib al-fun?n wa-mulah? al-?uy?n, known as the Book of Curiosities. The manuscript is a copy, probably made in Egypt in the late 12th or early 13th century, of an anonymous work compiled in the first half of the 11th century in Egypt. The treatise is extraordinarily important for the history of science, especially for astronomy and cartography, and contains an unparalleled series of diagrams of the heavens and maps of the earth. I put the goals and what you have to write but it is also up to you to make a modern day version of it as well. I will upload a sample of how everything is suppose to look like. I have decided to make the modern version one into an app called Instagram from there people can look at the stars and galaxy. Unlike the facebook one that the sample one has, we are going to recreate it with instagram. If you have any questions, ask me. I will also upload my essay that has information on the Book of Curiosities, that can help you as well to develop this project. This is suppose to look exactly or even better than the sample one so please me cautious and if you get confused, please ask because if I am not satisfied, I will unfortunately have to ask for a rewrite because I am giving you the information here and I am telling you the instructions precisely. So don’t forget you need the original manuscript and the second part will have the updated one which is the book of curiosities made into instagram. Thank you
