“The Prototype,” by Nick Arvin, revolves around the two main characters Martin and Eileen, who are different in many aspects of life and are from a rural town. Martin follows his father’s footsteps into car repair while Eileen goes to college away from home. Martin gets an opportunity to impress his high school sweetheart when an SUV prototype arrives at his garage from Detroit. He notices that the engineers that brought the truck are not from his town since he has been rooted to that town for many years. He dishonestly drives the truck over to Eileen’s house and they drive off for a wild midnight ride. In his desperation to draw the attention of a now sophisticated woman, he steps irreversibly out of the dreary safety of his life and is willing to take risks. The arrival of the prototype coincides with Eileen arriving in town for vacation at the same time. The prototype gives him a chance to uproot himself and experience a whole new world outside of this town where he has spent many years of his life doing the same routine from day to day where he can be remembered. Martin is a stay at home young man who resists motion and has not traveled too far from the city limits. His life is a mere repetition that needs to be transformed and so to be uprooted and introduced to new things. As a mechanic, he obviously recycles and transforms old material into something almost like new not realizing that he himself needs to transform and venture out into the open. His life is also recycled when he takes over his father’s old business. On the other hand, Eileen is a sophisticated woman who has seen a lot around the world with and without her parents since she was small. She is constantly in motion and “her address changed almost every year.” Martin always thinks about the past.
