Aim: The aim of this dissertation is to design a fire alarm system for a locomotive. This fire alarm system will be designed to protect the locomotive driver and the surrounding audience. The fire detection system must be designed to work in cohesion with the PLC to detect and warn people or stop the locomotive from working through visual and audio appliances when the fire or smoke is present. The objectives of the project are: Perform a literature review on existing fire alarm systems To study the fire alarm and protection systems for the vehicle (including maintenance guide for the fire system plus the relevant standard for the fire system in the train). Produce a maintenance procedure for a fire Alarm system for the vehicle. Study the technical and environmental issues related to the vehicle. Become familiar with Fire Alarm and protection system. Improve the safety process by increasing quality and efficiency. Background The existing locomotive without any fire alarm system, in these project we need to be motivating and design with the latest fire alarm detection and alarm system to accommodate the existing system and the future additional fire alarm system components for the entire train. The existing design of fire alarm control panel will be installed with 2-loop which may accommodate in one or two fire alarm control panels. Summery: The scope of work includes the following for the successful completion, operation and handing over to the team. Dismantle the existing system and install a new alarm control panel along with the battery charger, battery units and associated controllers etc., and hand over to team. Design and install new fire alarm control panel (in one or more networked panels) along with the battery chargers, battery units. Carry out all necessary modifications to the racks to house the new fire alarm panels in the existing locomotive. Terminate all the existing fire alarm loops to the new fire alarm control panel, which shall include all interfaces to the mechanical equipment s likes PLC or any external alarm devices, fire suppression systems etc. Re-programming and configuration of the fire alarm loops after the installation. Provide all necessary software packages, graphics etc. for the project as necessary. Provide new physical addresses to the exiting fire alarm components in line with the new modification. Network the Fire Alarm Control Panel with the PLC. Testing and commissioning of the new fire alarm control panel. Provide spares, keys, inventory control list, etc. Modify existing as-built record drawings and provide O&M Manuals as per BS standards and requirements. Fire Alarm system; The Fire Alarm system is divided to two types: Conventional Addressable Fire alarm types: Conventional Panel: These types of fire alarms are simpler and are traditionally used in locations such as offices, switchgear rooms, electrical substations and all closed areas where smoke is not permitted. 2- Addressable / intelligent: These types of alarms are more complex and are commonly used in large sized buildings. Fire detection equipment: Smoke detector: There are two types of detectors used which are ionization and ?,.. Heat (temperature) detector: There are two types of heat detectors, the first type of heat detector is activated when there is a sudden change in temperature and the second type is activated when the heat temperature reaches a specific limit. Ultra violet detector (UVD): This detector depends on ultra violet ray and it is used in high rise area. Ultra violet & infrared detector (UVIR) (Flame detector): This type is combined of ultra violet and infrared detector and it is detecting violet and infrared beam. These types of detectors are normally used in locations such as in boilers, gas inlet area and fuel gas station. Manual call points (Breakage glass): It is located on the wall and used everywhere. Projected beam smoke detector: it is modified for factory, warehouse, and any area with high sailing (30*330). The function of this detector is depend on the fire, if the smoke disturb or observe the IR ray to the set point to the receiver it will give alarm. Linear heat sensing cable (LHS): this type is for detection and protection in same time, and it can activate from fire or short circuit. Length is 250-500 m.
