Thesis should be about appearances. For this paper, you will pick one of the following pairs of poems: Richard Cory, Edwin Arlington Robinson & The Unknown Citizen, W.H. Auden Each pair shares at least one common theme. In a well-organized 275 word essay in American standard style, you will compare and contrast how the two poems treat that theme. Consider the following questions as you prepare your paper: What common theme do the poems treat? Do the poems end up coming to the same conclusions on that subject? Do the poems use similar or different techniques in exploring their themes? Consider the different uses of rhyme, meter, metaphor, tone, line length, and word choice in each poem as it develops and explores its theme. You will need to pull out examples and quotes from both poems as you support your thesis statement, which will make a clear, debatable statement comparing the two poems. Your paper should be double-spaced, typed in 12 pt. font, and stapled. It will be graded on content, analysis, use of sources, grammar, mechanics, organization, and appropriateness to the assignment.
